Food Waste Prevention Week

Come Celebrate Scraps!

Sustainable Tucson is partnering with more than 600 organizations and businesses across the country in support of Food Waste Prevention Week, April 1-7, 2024. Food Waste Prevention Week was launched in 2021 to highlight the importance of food waste reduction while also addressing the issue of food insecurity in our community.

In recognition of this initiative, on April 6 from 1:00-4:00, Sustainable Tucson is sponsoring a special event at MotoSonora Brewing Company. The event will feature students from Tucson Village Farm doing cooking demos, showing how you can prepare easy and tasty dishes with food items that might otherwise be thought of as waste. Community organizations will share information about growing some of your own food as well as what you can do to reduce food waste in your home, including composting. Other activities will include games, a raffle, and a food drive to benefit Casa Maria. Donate four nonperishable food items and get a $1 discount on a drink from MotoSonora. Both the City of Tucson and Pima County have proclaimed April 1-7, 2024, Food Waste Prevention Week.

Why does reducing food waste matter?

  • Saves money – A family of four can save an average of $1500 a year.
  • Conserves resources – Land, water, energy and human resources are used to grow, package and transport food.
  • Improves food security – Safe and nutritious food that is currently thrown away can help feed hungry people.
  • Benefits the environment – Estimates suggest that food waste accounts for one-third of all human-caused greenhouse gasses.

Respect for food is respect for life, for who we are and what we do.
